EATING AT HOME 101
Basics for Beginners

‘Home Cooking’ - the term conjures up visions of Grandma slaving over a hot stove, preparing everything from scratch, using fresh veggies from the garden and meat from the animals raised on the farm. And everything was loaded with nutrition, goodness, and flavour.

Times Have Changed...We Don't Seem To Have As Much Of It!

Well, times have indeed changed...Grandma had more time to spend in the kitchen. On the other hand, she didn't have the staggering array of time-saving devices that are available today. Things like choppers, grinders, mixers, slow cookers, and all kinds of devices that can shortcut the all-important step that professional chefs call ‘PREP’. Any pro will tell that food prep(aration) is one of the keys to running a successful kitchen. That rule carries as much weight in the home as it does in a busy restaurant.

Get Control of Your Food...

Many meals can be prepared in advance and refrigerated or frozen, just like the pre-packaged convenience foods you'll find in the supermarket. The difference is, when you prepare your own meals, YOU control the quality by knowing exactly what goes into the meal.

...And Save Money Doing It!

You should also be able to save some money by preparing your own foods, and that's an important point for most people these days. We strongly believe that it is cheaper to eat good, wholesome foods than it is to eat convenience foods.

Just Ease Into It - YOU CAN DO IT!

It all starts with a basic understanding of the concept of food and how it fits into our lives. If you agree that ‘You Are What You Eat’, you are on your way to a better lifestyle! After that, it's simply a matter of sorting out your schedule to allow you to spend the time necessary to prepare decent food for you and your family. It's not that difficult as long as you take it step by step. Think of it this way: If you're going to eat an elephant, do it one bite at a time!

Purely Simple
Home Cooking Tips
Get a pressure cooker and use it to save time for creations like your own homemade baked beans.

Make your own iced tea easily by brewing up hot tea, letting it come to room temperature, add fresh lemon juice and slices, and refrigerate. If you need a sweetener, use a bit of honey. Pure, simple, cheap, and delicious!

Like Salsa? You can make your own by combining chopped onion, a can of tomatoes, a dash of vinegar, and some good salt. Use a potato masher to get it to the right consistency, refrigerate, and then enjoy! You can customize this basic mixture by adding orange segments, perhaps a dash of cumin, hot chili, or whatever your taste buds desire.

Pancake Syrup. You can make a pancake syrup/topping that's good for your kids and it's easy! Just combine some berries with juice from a freshly-squeezed orange and cook it in a sauce pan. If you need it a bit sweeter, add some honey. Need more liquid? Squeeze another orange. You don't have to use those commercial (eew!) syrups!
